Countries & languages

Say where you're from, what nationality you are and which languages you speak.

Grammar

Countries, nationalities and languages

  • Countries, nationalities and languages always start with a capital letter in Dutch: Nederland, een Nederlander, Ik spreek Nederlands. Adjectives too: Nederlandse kaas.
  • Where you're from: Ik kom uit + country: Ik kom uit Spanje. Which language: Ik spreek + language: Ik spreek Spaans en een beetje Nederlands.
  • Nationality as an adjective works for everyone: Ik ben Spaans. Wij zijn Duits.
  • Nationality as a noun has a male and a female form, and like jobs you can leave out een: Hij is (een) Spanjaard. Zij is (een) Spaanse. So Ik ben Spaanse is fine for a woman, but Ik ben Spanjaard only for a man.
  • The language often has the same form as the adjective, and it is a het-word: het Nederlands, het Duits.
