Insurance basics
Understand the basic words for insurance and what you must or needn't have.
Grammar
Moeten vs niet hoeven te
- moeten = must / have to: In Nederland moet je in principe een zorgverzekering hebben.
- “Don't have to” is niet hoeven te (or geen … hoeven te). Note the te before the infinitive: Je hoeft geen reisverzekering te hebben.
- Niet moeten is not the normal way to say “don't have to”; use hoeven: Je hoeft niet te betalen.
- verplicht = compulsory: Een zorgverzekering is verplicht. Een reisverzekering is niet verplicht.
- Rules, prices and conditions differ per insurer and can change every year, so always check your own polis.
