A2 · Lesson 116 · Out & about
A museum visit
Visit a museum: tickets, tours, the cloakroom and the house rules.
Grammar
Rules and signs: mogen & infinitives
- Signs often use a bare infinitive as an instruction: Niet aanraken. Niet roken. Tassen afgeven bij de garderobe.
- An infinitive can also be the subject of a sentence: Fotograferen met flits is niet toegestaan. Eten is verboden in de zalen.
- In conversation, use mogen: Je mag hier niet eten. Mag ik hier foto's maken?
- toegestaan (permitted) and verboden (forbidden) are formal and typical of signs; mag wel / mag niet is everyday speech.
