A2 · Lesson 115 · Out & about
Opening hours & queues
Ask politely when places open, wait your turn and take a number.
Grammar
Polite indirect questions
- Polite questions often start with Weet u… or Kunt u me zeggen…. The real question then becomes a subclause with the verb at the end.
- A yes/no question gets of (whether): Is de winkel open? → Weet u of de winkel open is?
- A question word stays at the front of the subclause: Hoe laat gaat het loket open? → Weet u hoe laat het loket opengaat?
- Separable verbs join up again at the end: gaat … open → opengaat, gaat … dicht → dichtgaat.
