A2 · Lesson 86 · Living in the Netherlands
School
Talk about your children's school, grades and parents' evenings.
Grammar
Moeten + infinitive and time expressions
- moeten + infinitive = to have to. moeten is in second place, the infinitive at the end: Ik moet om half negen op school zijn.
- If you start with a time expression, the verb still comes second and the subject follows: Morgen moet ik om half negen op school zijn.
- In the middle of the sentence, time comes before place: Ik moet morgen op school zijn.
- op school = at school, naar school = to school — no article: De kinderen gaan met de fiets naar school.
- Dutch grades go from 1 to 10. A 6 or higher (usually 5.5 and up) is een voldoende (a pass); anything lower is een onvoldoende (a fail). An 8 is very good; a 10 is rare.
