Last weekend

Tell someone what you did at the weekend.

Grammar

Perfect tense with separable verbs

  • For the weekend story, use the perfect: hebben or zijn + participle. Verbs of movement towards a place or change take zijn: We zijn uitgegaan. Most others take hebben: Ik heb uitgeslapen.
  • With separable verbs, ge- goes between the prefix and the verb: uitslapen → uitgeslapen, uitgaan → uitgegaan, uitrusten → uitgerust.
  • Parts of the day join the day into one word: zaterdagochtend, zondagmiddag, vrijdagavond. Last weekend = afgelopen weekend or vorig weekend.
