A2 · Lesson 98 · Working life
Small talk with colleagues
Chat at the coffee machine, catch up after the weekend and join in at the borrel.
Grammar
Small talk in the past
- Ask about the weekend with the perfect tense: Heb je een leuk weekend gehad? Wat heb je gedaan? Ben je weg geweest?
- Small talk is often shortened: Druk gehad? = Heb je het druk gehad? Lekker weekend gehad?
- Short answers are fine: Ja, lekker rustig. Ja, hoor! Nee, niet echt. Ja, best druk. Then ask back: En jij?
- Office custom: on your birthday it's common to trakteren — you bring cake or treats for your colleagues, and they congratulate you: Gefeliciteerd!
