B1 · Lesson 161 · Housing & community
Buying a house
Talk about viewings, asking prices and mortgages, and give careful advice.
Grammar
Careful statements: zou, het kan zijn dat, waarschijnlijk
- Use zou + infinitive to make advice softer: Je zou eerst met een adviseur kunnen praten. (You could talk to an adviser first.)
- Het kan zijn dat… and Het zou kunnen dat… (it may be that) are followed by a subclause with the verb at the end: Het kan zijn dat de vraagprijs nog daalt.
- Adverbs make a statement less certain: waarschijnlijk (probably), misschien (perhaps), voor zover ik weet (as far as I know): Het huis is waarschijnlijk te duur.
- False friend: eventueel means “possibly / if necessary”, not “eventually” (that is uiteindelijk): We kunnen eventueel iets meer bieden.
- Rules for mortgages differ per bank and change over time, so people often hedge: Voor zover ik weet, kun je bij die bank ook…
