Although & despite

Say “although”, “despite” and “even so” — and build a balanced argument.

Grammar

Hoewel, ondanks and toch

  • Hoewel (although) starts a subclause, so the verb goes to the end; a main clause after it starts with the verb: Hoewel het regende, gingen we wandelen.
  • Ondanks (despite) is followed by a noun, not a clause: Ondanks de regen gingen we wandelen. Add toch in the main clause for extra contrast: Hoewel het regende, gingen we toch wandelen.
  • Weliswaar …, maar … = admittedly …, but …: Het is weliswaar duur, maar het is erg goed. Desondanks (nevertheless) at the start is followed by the verb: Desondanks gingen we wandelen.
  • Ook al (even though) is followed directly by the verb: Ik koop het, ook al is het duur. Zelfs = even: Zelfs mijn oma heeft een smartphone.
  • Terwijl (whereas) sends the verb to the end; in tegenstelling tot (unlike) takes a noun: In tegenstelling tot mijn broer houd ik van sport.
