If I were… (zou)

Grammar

Zou / zouden + infinitive

Zou (singular) / zouden (plural) + infinitive = would: Ik zou graag naar Japan gaan.
Unreal conditions use als + simple past, then zou: Als ik rijk was, zou ik een huis kopen.
After the als-clause the main clause starts with the verb: Als ik tijd had, zou ik komen.
Advice: Je zou meer moeten slapen. (You should sleep more.)
In the main clause you may also use the simple past: Als ik tijd had, kwam ik.
