B1 · Lesson 139 · Communicating well
Formal emails
Write to an employer, landlord or the council in the right register.
Grammar
Formal register
- In formal emails use u (you) and uw (your), never je/jij/jouw. The verb with u takes -t: u vindt, u heeft (u hebt is also correct).
- u and uw are written in lower case, unlike German Sie: Graag ontvang ik uw reactie. Only at the start of a sentence: U kunt mij bellen.
- Polite requests: Zou u … kunnen …? or Ik wil u vragen …: Zou u mij de informatie kunnen sturen?
- Typical openings cause inversion: Hierbij stuur ik u…, In de bijlage vindt u…, Naar aanleiding van uw e-mail wil ik…
- Open with Geachte heer Jansen, / Geachte mevrouw Bakker, (or Beste… if less formal) and close with Met vriendelijke groet, + your name.
