Formal vs informal Dutch

Recognise and use the formal words of letters, forms and official emails.

Grammar

Formal words and nominalisation

  • Official Dutch (letters from the gemeente, the bank, your employer) uses more formal words for everyday ones: kopen → aanschaffen, vragen → verzoeken, als → indien, omdat → aangezien.
  • Verzoeken takes a te-infinitive, with or without om: Wij verzoeken u om het formulier in te vullen. = Wij verzoeken u het formulier in te vullen.
  • Indien and aangezien start a subclause, like als and omdat — the verb goes to the end: Indien u vragen heeft, kunt u contact met ons opnemen.
  • Formal writing often turns verbs into nouns (nominalisation): Nadat wij uw betaling hebben ontvangen… → Na ontvangst van uw betaling…; als u vertrekt → bij vertrek.
  • In everyday conversation these words sound stiff — save them for writing and official situations.
