Koningsdag, Sinterklaas, Oud en Nieuw — and saying when things happen.
Grammar
Time conjunctions
- Voordat, nadat, terwijl, zodra, totdat and sinds start a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end: We eten oliebollen voordat het vuurwerk begint.
- When the time clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb: Zodra het twaalf uur is, steken we vuurwerk af.
- Sinds + present tense = since (and still true): Sinds ik in Nederland woon, vier ik Sinterklaas.
- In speech voordat is often shortened to voor and totdat to tot: Wacht tot ik terug ben.
