Iets moois: adjectives as nouns

Say “something nice”, “nothing new” and “the good thing is…”.

Grammar

Iets + adjective + -s

  • After iets, niets (niks), veel, weinig and wat, an adjective gets -s: iets moois, niets nieuws, veel goeds, wat lekkers.
  • Just add the -s to the basic form: groot → iets groots, raar → iets raars. Adjectives that already end in -s don't get another one: iets fris, niets vies.
  • De + adjective + -e is a person; add -n for the plural: de rijken (the rich), de armen (the poor), een bekende (an acquaintance).
  • Het + adjective + -e means “the … thing”: Het mooie is dat het gratis is. Het leuke van Utrecht is de sfeer.
