B1 · Lesson 141 · News & society
The news
Read headlines and news reports — and say who said what with volgens.
Grammar
Volgens… and the passive in the news
- Volgens + person or source = according to. It counts as the first element, so the verb comes next: Volgens de politie is de man gevlucht.
- News reports love the passive with er when the doer is unknown or unimportant: Er is een man aangehouden. (A man has been arrested.) Er zijn twee auto's gestolen.
- Headlines drop articles and the helping verb: Man aangehouden na overval = Er is een man aangehouden na een overval.
- False friend: actueel means current / topical (het actuele nieuws), not “actual”. “Actually” is eigenlijk or echt.
