Travel stories

Tell others about a trip: where you went, what you saw and what went wrong.

Grammar

Toen, als or wanneer?

  • toen = when, for one moment or period in the past: Toen we in Lissabon aankwamen, regende het.
  • als = when(ever) in the present or future, and also for repeated events in the past: Als ik in Spanje ben, eet ik laat. Als we vroeger op vakantie gingen, kampeerden we altijd.
  • wanneer is the question word: Wanneer vertrek je? In a subclause it can replace als (a bit more formal), but never toen.
  • Toen can also mean “then” at the start of a main clause, with inversion: Toen gingen we naar het strand.
