Discuss life expectancy, pensions and care for the elderly, and express degree and consequence with zo … dat and te … om te.

Degree and consequence: zo … dat, te … om te

Zo + adjective/adverb … dat gives a consequence of a degree: De vergrijzing gaat zo snel dat er te weinig zorgpersoneel is. Formal alternatives: zodanig … dat, dusdanig … dat: De kosten zijn dusdanig gestegen dat er bezuinigd moet worden.
With nouns use zoveel / zo weinig … dat: Er zijn zoveel ouderen dat de wachtlijsten groeien.
Te + adjective + om … te = too … to: Mijn opa is te oud om nog zelf auto te rijden. Genoeg comes after the adjective: Ze is fit genoeg om zelfstandig te wonen.
Don't confuse this with zodat (so that), which has no degree word: Hij is verhuisd, zodat hij dichter bij zijn dochter woont.
