B2 · Lesson 196 · Working life (B2)
Resolving conflicts
Talk through disagreements at work or at home, and report what others said with reported speech.
Grammar
Reported speech
- Statements: zeggen / vertellen / beweren dat + subclause (verb at the end). Pronouns and possessives change to fit the new speaker: “Ik ben het er niet mee eens.” → Hij zei dat hij het er niet mee eens was.
- After a past reporting verb, the tense usually shifts back: is → was, heeft gedaan → had gedaan, zal → zou. If it's still true, you may keep the present: Ze zei dat ze morgen komt / zou komen.
- Yes/no questions become of-clauses: “Kun je even helpen?” → Ze vroeg of ik even kon helpen. Question-word questions keep the question word: Hij vroeg waarom ik zo boos was.
- Requests and orders: vragen om … te or zeggen dat … moet: Ze vroeg me om rustig te blijven. Hij zei dat ik moest ophouden.
- Mediators use it to mirror what they hear: Als ik je goed begrijp, zeg je dat je je niet gehoord voelt.
