Conditions & purpose

Express conditions, purpose and proportion with tenzij, mits, zodat, opdat, naarmate and more.

Grammar

Conjunctions of condition, purpose and degree

  • All of these are subordinating: the finite verb goes to the end of the subclause, and when the subclause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb: Zolang het droog blijft, eten we buiten.
  • Conditions: tenzij = unless (it already contains the negation: We gaan, tenzij het regent = …als het niet regent); mits = provided that, a strict condition; zolang = as long as; indien = formal als.
  • Result and purpose: zodat = so that (a result; in speech also a purpose): Ik spreek langzaam, zodat iedereen me kan volgen. Opdat = in order that, formal and purpose only. With the same subject in both clauses, prefer om … te: Ik vertrek vroeg om de trein te halen.
  • Degree: naarmate = as / the more, usually with a comparative: Naarmate de avond vorderde, werd het gesprek persoonlijker. Compare hoe eerder je begint, des te sneller ben je klaar. Voor zover = as far as: Voor zover ik weet, is de winkel open.
  • Aangezien = since / given that, a formal omdat for a reason the listener already knows; it usually opens the sentence: Aangezien niemand reageerde, hebben we zelf besloten.
