Dutch history in context

Talk about key moments in Dutch history — from the Revolt to the post-war reconstruction — and narrate the past with the right tenses and time conjunctions.

Grammar

Narrating history

  • History is usually told in the simple past: In 1568 begon de Opstand tegen Spanje. The perfect sums up or links the past to today: De handel heeft het land rijk gemaakt.
  • For something that happened before another past event, use the pluperfect (had / was + participle), especially after nadat: Nadat de Fransen in 1813 waren vertrokken, werd Willem I soeverein vorst.
  • Toen = when, for a single moment in the past (never als): Toen de Duitsers in mei 1940 binnenvielen, vluchtte de koningin naar Londen. Als / wanneer are for repeated events or the future.
  • Nadat, voordat, totdat, sinds are subordinating (verb at the end); daarna, daarvoor, sindsdien are adverbs and cause inversion: Sindsdien wordt 1 juli elk jaar herdacht.
  • Time expressions: in 1648, in de zeventiende eeuw, aan het eind van de achttiende eeuw, tijdens de bezetting, na de oorlog.
