Er in complex sentences

Combine several functions of er in one sentence and split er/daar/waar + preposition across long sentences.

Grammar

Er doing several jobs at once

  • Er has five jobs: existential (Er staat een fiets voor de deur.), place (Ik woon er al jaren.), quantitative with numbers (Ik heb er drie.), prepositional (Ik denk er vaak aan.) and the subjectless passive (Er wordt gedanst.).
  • Two er’s may appear in one clause, but never side by side. If they would touch, one disappears and the other does all the jobs: Er hebben er gisteren twee over gesproken. → Gisteren hebben er twee over gesproken. / …dat er twee over hebben gesproken. One er can also be quantitative and prepositional at once: Ik heb er drie over gelezen. (three books about it)
  • Unstressed er comes early in the middle field — after the finite verb, the subject and unstressed pronouns (het, me, je) — while the preposition stays right before the final verbs, however long the sentence: Ik heb het er gisteren met mijn baas over gehad. Ik leg me er niet bij neer.
  • For emphasis, daar moves to the front and the preposition still waits at the end: Daar heb ik nooit echt goed over nagedacht. Niet and nooit go before the preposition: er niet over, never erover niet.
  • Questions with waar … allemaal … ask for a list: Waar hebben jullie het allemaal over gehad? (What did you talk about — all of it?) Similarly Wie komen er allemaal? and Wat heb je allemaal gekocht?
