Connectors of contrast

• Terwijl (whereas / while) and hoewel (although) are subordinating: the verb goes to the end. Hij werkt zestig uur per week, terwijl hij nauwelijks genoeg verdient.
• Maar joins two main clauses without inversion. Toch and desondanks (nevertheless) are adverbs: in first position the verb follows directly. Het werk is onzeker. Toch kiezen veel studenten ervoor.
• Echter (however) is formal and usually comes after the verb: De vrijheid is groot; het inkomen is echter onzeker. At the start of a sentence (Echter, …) it is common but considered less elegant.
• Daarentegen (on the other hand) contrasts two groups or things and usually follows the one it introduces: De meeste werknemers bouwen automatisch pensioen op. Zzp'ers daarentegen moeten dat zelf regelen.
• Two-part contrasts: weliswaar … maar (admittedly … but) and enerzijds … anderzijds (on the one hand … on the other): Platformwerk is weliswaar flexibel, maar het biedt weinig zekerheid.
