Remote & hybrid work

Talk about working from home, office days and staying connected, and handle verb clusters with modals and laten.

Grammar

Verb clusters in the perfect

  • In the perfect, a modal verb or laten, gaan, blijven, zien, horen takes the infinitive instead of a participle when another verb depends on it: Ik heb vandaag thuis kunnen werken. (not gekund) We hebben de vergadering laten verplaatsen.
  • In a subclause, standard written Dutch puts the finite verb first in the cluster: …omdat ik vandaag thuis heb kunnen werken.
  • With three verbs the order stays the same — finite verb, modal, main verb: …dat we onze kantoordagen beter zouden moeten afstemmen.
  • A separable verb can stay whole at the end or split around the cluster: …dat ik gisteren niet heb kunnen inloggen / …niet in heb kunnen loggen. The first is more common in writing.
  • Zitten, staan, liggen, lopen + te also use the infinitive in the perfect, and te is usually dropped: Ik heb de hele ochtend zitten beeldbellen.
