Writing a motivation letter

Write a convincing motivation letter with formal phrases and varied word order.

Grammar

Varying the first position

  • Any element can open a Dutch main clause; the finite verb follows straight after it and the subject comes third. Use this to avoid starting every sentence with Ik: Met veel belangstelling heb ik uw vacature gelezen.
  • Put the element that links to the previous sentence first: In mijn huidige functie ben ik verantwoordelijk voor de planning. Daarbij werk ik nauw samen met andere afdelingen.
  • A whole subclause can come first; the main clause then starts with its verb: Omdat ik graag met mensen werk, spreekt deze functie mij erg aan.
  • Standard formal phrases: Graag solliciteer ik naar de functie van …, Bijgaand treft u mijn cv aan., Graag licht ik mijn motivatie toe in een persoonlijk gesprek.
  • Show, don't just tell: link each quality to evidence. Ik ben een teamspeler → Als projectleider heb ik een team van acht collega's aangestuurd.
