Grammar
Participle phrases in formal Dutch
- Some participles have become prepositions in formal Dutch: gezien de drukte (given how busy it is), gelet op de kosten (in view of the costs), uitgaande van deze cijfers (assuming these figures), afgezien van het weer (apart from the weather), voorafgaand aan de vergadering (prior to the meeting).
- A past participle phrase can replace a whole subclause: Aangekomen in Utrecht belde ze haar moeder. = Toen ze in Utrecht was aangekomen, belde ze haar moeder. The phrase takes the first position, so the finite verb follows straight after it (a comma is optional).
- The phrase must refer to the subject of the main clause: Thuisgekomen merkte ik dat de deur openstond. (I came home), never with the door as subject.
- Fixed absolute phrases comment on the whole sentence: strikt genomen (strictly speaking), alles bij elkaar genomen (all things considered), eerlijk gezegd (to be honest), kort gezegd (in short).
- A present participle (infinitive + d) describes something happening at the same time: Lachend liep hij weg. Ze kwam fluitend binnen. With al it means “while …ing”: Al wandelend bespraken we het plan. In speech, a subclause (toen…, terwijl…, omdat…) usually sounds more natural.
