Theatre & performing arts

Talk about plays, premières, cabaret and touring companies, and react with adjectives that take fixed prepositions.

Grammar

Adjectives with fixed prepositions

  • Many adjectives and participles need a fixed preposition: onder de indruk van, enthousiast over, verbaasd over, trots op, gek op, bekend om (famous for), geschikt voor, tevreden over.
  • Some change meaning with the preposition: bekend om = famous for a quality; bekend van = known from somewhere: Ze is bekend om haar humor. Ze is bekend van tv. Teleurgesteld in is used for a person or their work, teleurgesteld over for a situation.
  • Replace a thing with er + preposition; in the middle of the sentence er and the preposition are usually split: Ik was er erg van onder de indruk. We zijn er heel tevreden over.
  • Before a clause, use an anticipating er: Het gezelschap is er trots op dat de tournee uitverkocht is.
  • For people, keep the pronoun: Ik ben trots op haar (not erop).
