Sport & society

Discuss elite and grassroots sport, sponsorship and fan behaviour, using adjectives with fixed prepositions.

Grammar

Adjectives with fixed prepositions

  • Many adjectives take a fixed preposition that you simply have to learn: afhankelijk van, trots op, gewend aan, geschikt voor, toegankelijk voor, betrokken bij, gevoelig voor, jaloers op, verslaafd aan.
  • With a pronoun for a thing, use er/daar + preposition, split around the middle of the sentence: Ik ben er trots op. Daar ben ik niet aan gewend.
  • With a whole clause, add er + preposition before dat or om … te: Hij is er trots op dat zijn club kampioen is. Ze is eraan gewend om vroeg te trainen.
  • The prepositional phrase can go before the adjective at the end of a clause, or after it: Veel clubs zijn van sponsors afhankelijk. = Veel clubs zijn afhankelijk van sponsors. Before a noun, formal Dutch puts it in front: een van vrijwilligers afhankelijke club.
