Academic Dutch

Write and read research texts: hypotheses, findings, sources — and the impersonal style that goes with them.

Grammar

Impersonal constructions in academic writing

  • Academic Dutch puts the research, not the writer, at the centre: Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat… (the research shows that…), Uit de analyse komt naar voren dat…
  • The passive is very common, often with er: Er wordt aangetoond dat… Er is gekozen voor een kwalitatieve methode. In hoofdstuk 3 worden de resultaten besproken.
  • The text itself can be the subject: Dit artikel beschrijft…, Deze studie toont aan dat… — aantonen is separable: toont … aan, heeft aangetoond. Ik or wij is accepted in many fields, but je is not.
  • Learn the structures of reporting verbs: concluderen dat, stellen dat (to argue), wijzen op (to point to), zich baseren op (to base oneself on). Cite with Volgens De Vries (2019)… or Zoals Jansen (2020) stelt, …
  • Verantwoorden means to justify or account for your choices: In hoofdstuk 2 wordt de keuze voor deze methode verantwoord. Every quotation (citaat) needs a bronvermelding; without one it counts as plagiarism.
