Academic presentations

Guide an audience through a talk: announce, move on, refer to slides and handle questions.

Grammar

Signposting with separable verbs

  • Signposting verbs are often separable and many have a fixed preposition: stilstaan bij (to dwell on), ingaan op (to go into), uiteenzetten (to set out), terugkomen op. Main clause: Ik sta kort stil bij de methode.
  • With a modal, the verb rejoins its particle at the end: Ik wil kort stilstaan bij de methode. In a subclause, too: …voordat ik de resultaten uiteenzet.
  • Use the present tense for what you are about to do: Eerst bespreek ik de achtergrond; daarna ga ik in op de resultaten. Keep zullen for a promise: Ik zal het kort houden.
  • Moving on and referring to visuals: Dit brengt me bij mijn tweede punt. Op deze dia ziet u… Zoals de grafiek laat zien, … Closing: Ter afsluiting… Dat is, in een notendop, mijn betoog.
  • Handling questions: Daar kom ik zo op terug. Als ik uw vraag goed begrijp, … Zullen we dat na afloop bespreken? And if you lose your way: Sorry, ik ben even de draad kwijt.
