C1 · Lesson 267 · Policy debates (C1)
Technology ethics & AI regulation
Debate how to regulate algorithms and AI: explainability, liability and supervision — and say what can or can't be done with -baar and zijn + te.
Grammar
Can it be done? -baar and zijn + te
- -baar turns a transitive verb into an adjective meaning “can be …-ed”: controleren → controleerbaar, uitleggen → uitlegbaar, herleiden → herleidbaar. The negative takes on-: onvoorspelbaar, oncontroleerbaar.
- Add -heid for the abstract noun — always a de-word: de uitlegbaarheid, de controleerbaarheid, de herleidbaarheid.
- Zijn + te + infinitive often means roughly the same as -baar: De beslissing is niet te controleren. = is niet controleerbaar. With a separable verb, te goes in the middle: niet uit te leggen.
- Adjective endings still apply: een uitlegbaar besluit (het-word, indefinite: no -e), een uitlegbare beslissing, het uitlegbare besluit.
- Liability: aansprakelijk zijn voor, iemand aansprakelijk stellen voor (to hold someone liable).
