Architecture criticism

Judge buildings and urban spaces: facades, style, repurposing and how a building fits its surroundings — with evaluative adjective suffixes.

Grammar

Suffixes that judge: -loos, -vol, -rijk, -arm, -achtig

  • -loos = without, and is usually negative: karakterloos, smakeloos, zielloos. Exceptions such as tijdloos (timeless) and moeiteloos (effortless) are praise.
  • -vol = full of, and is usually positive: sfeervol (atmospheric), smaakvol (tasteful), betekenisvol.
  • -rijk / -arm = rich / poor in something: kleurrijk, groenrijk; onderhoudsarm (low-maintenance), prikkelarm (low-stimulus). Note the linking -s- in onderhoudsarm.
  • -achtig = -like, somewhat; in criticism often slightly mocking: bunkerachtig, kazerneachtig (barracks-like), kantoorachtig.
  • They inflect like any adjective: een tijdloos ontwerp, het tijdloze ontwerp, een bunkerachtige uitstraling.
