Chairing a meeting

Open, steer and close a formal meeting: het woord geven, ter stemming brengen, de rondvraag.

Grammar

Steering phrases: fixed verb–noun combinations and polite firmness

  • Chairing relies on fixed verb + noun combinations; in a main clause the noun sits between the verb and the rest: Ik open de vergadering. Ik geef het woord aan mevrouw Bakker. A participant asks: Mag ik het woord?
  • Frozen ter-phrases are typical of meetings: een voorstel ter stemming brengen (to put to the vote), Er ligt een voorstel ter tafel. (is on the table). Learn them as a whole.
  • Firm but polite steering: Mag ik u verzoeken het kort te houden? Ik stel voor dat we dit punt doorschuiven naar de volgende vergadering. Laten we ons aan de tijd houden.
  • Interrupting and parking a point: Mag ik u even onderbreken? — onderbreken is inseparable (ik heb u onderbroken). Terugkomen op is separable and splits around daar: Ik kom daar straks op terug.
  • A hamerstuk is an item approved without discussion (the chair's gavel is the hamer); the rondvraag (any other business) comes just before the chair closes the meeting.
