Climate policy & trade-offs

Weigh up carbon pricing, fairness and who pays — and concede a point with hoe … ook, al … nog zo and ook al.

Grammar

Conceding: hoe … ook, nog zo, ook al

  • Hoe + adjective … ook = however …: a subclause with the verb at the end. The main clause that follows keeps normal word order (no inversion): Hoe duur de maatregel ook is, we kunnen niet langer wachten.
  • The same with wie / wat / waar … ook: Wie er ook wint, de burger betaalt de rekening. Wat de regering ook besluit, er komt kritiek.
  • Al + verb directly after it = even though; often with nog zo (however much): Al is het plan nog zo goed, zonder draagvlak lukt het niet.
  • Ook al starts a normal subclause (verb last): Ook al kost het geld, op termijn verdient het zich terug. Again, the main clause often starts without inversion.
  • Compare weliswaar … maar (see Rebuttal & persuasion): there you concede first and then counter; with hoe … ook you say the objection doesn't change the conclusion.
