Cultural heritage & museums

Talk about collections, restoration, loans and looted art — and pack information before the noun in formal descriptions.

Grammar

Packing information before the noun

  • Formal Dutch can move a whole relative clause in front of the noun, ending in a participle: het museum dat in 1885 werd geopend → het in 1885 geopende museum.
  • The order is: article — extra information — participle (or adjective) — noun: de door de staat aangekochte collectie, de in de oorlog geroofde schilderijen.
  • The usual adjective ending applies to the last word before the noun: het zorgvuldig gerestaureerde altaarstuk, but een zorgvuldig gerestaureerd altaarstuk (een + het-word: no -e).
  • A present participle can be used too: een in slechte staat verkerend schilderij (a painting in poor condition), de nog steeds lopende discussie.
  • This style is typical of museum labels, catalogues and news reports. Keep it short: more than four or five words before the noun gets heavy, and in speech a relative clause sounds more natural.
