Arguing with data

Back up an argument with figures: rises and falls, percentages and percentage points, comparisons and approximations.

Grammar

Prepositions with figures

  • stijgen / dalen met gives the size of the change; tot / naar gives the new level; van … naar / tot gives both: De omzet steeg met 8 procent tot 4,2 miljoen euro. Het aantal daalde van 300 naar 240.
  • Procent vs procentpunt: from 10% to 12% is a rise of 2 procentpunt, but of 20 procent. Journalists and politicians mix them up — sometimes on purpose.
  • Comparing: ten opzichte van (compared to, relative to) and vergeleken met: een daling ten opzichte van vorig jaar. Ten opzichte van is followed directly by a noun phrase.
  • Approximations: ruim de helft (just over half), krap de helft (just under half), nagenoeg / bijna (virtually), circa / zo'n (about). Dutch uses a decimal comma and a thousands point: 4,2 miljoen, 12.500.
  • Change verbs: verdubbelen (to double), verdrievoudigen (to triple), halveren (to halve). Without an object they take zijn: Het aantal klachten is gehalveerd.
