C1 · Lesson 274 · Tact & formality (C1)
Diplomatic refusals
Say no without burning bridges: decline invitations, offers and requests with regret, nuance and an alternative.
Grammar
Regret about what won't happen: had … willen
- Express regret about the past with had + modal + infinitive — a double infinitive: Ik had u graag willen helpen, maar… (I would have liked to help you). Without a modal: Ik was graag gekomen. (I would have liked to come.)
- For the present, use zou … willen: Ik zou graag ja willen zeggen, maar het past helaas niet in mijn agenda.
- Watch out: bedanken voor can mean to decline: Ik moet helaas bedanken voor de eer. = I must decline the honour. Context decides.
- Soften the no: tot mijn spijt, helaas, op dit moment, met de beste wil van de wereld — and offer an alternative: Misschien kan mijn collega u verder helpen. Een andere keer graag!
- Not saying no yet: We houden uw voorstel nog even in beraad. Ik zeg het toe, maar wel onder voorbehoud. Hij houdt nog een slag om de arm.
