Paired conjunctions
- Niet alleen … maar ook: Het lerarentekort raakt niet alleen leerlingen, maar ook ouders. If niet alleen opens the sentence, the verb follows immediately: Niet alleen is de werkdruk hoog, ook blijft het salaris achter.
- Noch … noch (neither … nor) is formal and already negative — no extra niet or geen: Er is noch geld noch personeel. De minister noch de inspectie wist ervan.
- Enerzijds … anderzijds (on the one hand … on the other) are adverbs, so each causes inversion at the start of its clause: Enerzijds wil de regering talent stimuleren, anderzijds moet ze achterstanden wegwerken.
- Ofwel … ofwel (either … or) presents alternatives: Leerlingen kiezen ofwel een technisch ofwel een economisch profiel.
