Debating ethical questions

Discuss moral dilemmas even-handedly: weigh values, present several sides and ask how far something is acceptable.

Grammar

Moral modals and in hoeverre

  • Shades of obligation: moeten (must), horen te and formal behoren te (ought to — a moral norm): Een arts hoort eerlijk te zijn. Een rechter behoort onpartijdig te zijn. Mogen asks about permission or acceptability: Mag een staat dat van zijn burgers vragen?
  • Het is (niet) aan + person + om … te: Het is niet aan de overheid om dat te bepalen. (It's not up to the government to decide that.)
  • In hoeverre (to what extent) introduces an indirect question with the verb at the end: De vraag is in hoeverre dit gerechtvaardigd is. In a direct question the verb follows straight after: In hoeverre is dit gerechtvaardigd?
  • Present several sides before (or instead of) giving your own view: Voorstanders wijzen op de autonomie van de patiënt; tegenstanders waarschuwen voor een hellend vlak.
  • Strong judgements such as verwerpelijk (reprehensible) are often reported rather than claimed: Sommigen vinden dit moreel verwerpelijk. Zij is principieel tegen… (opposed on principle).
