Toasts, tributes & condolences

Find the right words for a toast, a farewell speech or a letter of condolence.

Grammar

Fixed formulas for celebration and mourning

  • Toasts: Mag ik even uw aandacht? Ik wil graag het glas heffen op het bruidspaar. Laten we proosten op de toekomst! Both take op; the short form is just Op Jan en Els!
  • Toewensen is separable; the wish goes in between: Wij wensen je veel succes toe. Perfect: We hebben hem het allerbeste toegewenst.
  • Tributes: Vandaag zetten we Marja in het zonnetje. (we honour Marja) Zonder jou was dit nooit gelukt. — the past perfect form expresses what would not have happened.
  • Condolences use fixed phrases, often without a verb: Gecondoleerd met het verlies van uw moeder. Veel sterkte in deze moeilijke tijd. Wij zijn in gedachten bij jou en je familie. Formally: Wij betuigen u onze oprechte deelneming.
  • Choose the register: je/jullie for colleagues and friends, u for formal cards and people you don't know well. Close a card with Met oprecht medeleven, or Met hartelijke groet,.
