Hedging & nuance

Soften and qualify your claims: wellicht, vermoedelijk, naar verluidt, in zekere zin.

Grammar

Softening claims and keeping your distance

  • Probability adverbs go after the finite verb, or at the start with inversion: De oorzaak is vermoedelijk een storing. Wellicht is het verstandig om te wachten. Wellicht is a more formal misschien; vermoedelijk (presumably) suggests there is some evidence.
  • Limit the scope of a claim with enigszins (somewhat), in zekere zin (in a sense), tot op zekere hoogte (to some extent) and min of meer (more or less). Careful: in principe means “as a rule, normally” and leaves room for exceptions: In principe werk ik niet op vrijdag. “On principle” is uit principe.
  • Distance yourself from unconfirmed information with naar verluidt (reportedly) or with zou/zouden + infinitive — the typical news construction: De minister zou informatie hebben achtergehouden. (The minister allegedly withheld information.)
  • Impersonal frames introduce a subclause with the verb at the end: Het lijkt erop dat de economie herstelt. Het is niet uitgesloten dat de prijzen verder stijgen. After a fronted voor zover-clause the main clause inverts: Voor zover ik weet, is het niet verplaatst.
  • One or two hedges per claim is enough — stacking them (wellicht enigszins min of meer) makes you sound evasive.
