C1 · Lesson 246 · Speaking in public (C1)

Interviews & the media

Handle a journalist's questions: deflect, refuse to speculate and stay on message.

Grammar

Deflecting with daar + preposition

  • Spokespeople avoid repeating the topic; they use daar + preposition, which splits around the verb: Daar ga ik niet over. (That's not my call.) Daar kan ik niet op ingaan. (I can't go into that.)
  • With a modal, the preposition stays in the middle and the infinitive goes to the end: Ik kan daar op dit moment niets over zeggen. Ik wil daar niet op vooruitlopen. (I don't want to pre-empt that.)
  • Keeping options open: Ik sluit niets uit. (I'm not ruling anything out.) Refusing: Daar doe ik geen uitspraken over. Off the record: Dit is niet voor publicatie.
  • Complaining about coverage: Mijn woorden zijn uit hun verband gerukt. (taken out of context) — rukken is regular: gerukt.
  • The journalist pushes back: U ontwijkt mijn vraag. Ik herhaal mijn vraag. Wat vindt u daar zelf van? Stay on your kernboodschap (key message).
