C1 · Lesson 271 · Culture & criticism (C1)
Music criticism
Review a concert or album precisely: performance, sound, interplay and audience — and grade adjectives with -end adverbs.
Grammar
-end adverbs that grade an adjective
- Present participles (verb + -end) are often used as degree adverbs in front of an adjective: verrassend fris, opvallend ingetogen, ontroerend mooi, verbluffend virtuoos, teleurstellend vlak.
- As an adverb the -end word never inflects; only the adjective takes -e: een verrassend frisse uitvoering (not *verrassende frisse). Compare een verrassende, frisse uitvoering (two separate adjectives, with a comma).
- Used as a normal adjective, the participle inflects: een opzwepende finale, het ontroerende slot.
- Al + present participle = while doing, in the process of: Al luisterend ontdek je steeds nieuwe lagen. Het orkest vond al spelend zijn klank.
- Other precise graders: uiterst, buitengewoon, ronduit (downright), nogal (rather), enigszins (somewhat).
| adverb + adjective | with a de-word | with een + het-word |
|---|---|---|
| verrassend fris | een verrassend frisse uitvoering | een verrassend fris album |
| opvallend ingetogen | een opvallend ingetogen plaat | een opvallend ingetogen optreden |
| teleurstellend vlak | een teleurstellend vlakke uitvoering | een teleurstellend vlak concert |
