Writing an opinion piece

Write a punchy opinion piece: a clear stance, emphatic sentence patterns and a call to action.

Grammar

Emphasis: clefts, wie-clauses and fronting

  • A wat-sentence (pseudo-cleft) saves the key idea for the end: Wat ontbreekt, is visie. Wat mij stoort, is de toon van het debat. Inside the wat-clause the verb goes last; a comma separates it from is.
  • A cleft with het is / het zijn … die/dat singles out one element: Het zijn de burgers die de rekening betalen. With a plural noun, use zijn, even though the sentence starts with het: the verb agrees with the plural noun.
  • A generic wie-clause means “whoever, anyone who”; the main clause then starts with its verb: Wie goed onderwijs wil, moet leraren beter betalen. Wie A zegt, moet ook B zeggen.
  • Het is hoog tijd dat + subclause (verb last) is the classic call to action: Het is hoog tijd dat de politiek ingrijpt. Urge with met klem: Ik roep de minister met klem op dit besluit te heroverwegen.
  • Fronting the object or an adverbial adds emphasis — the verb stays in second place: Juist dat heeft de regering nooit begrepen.
