Report other authors fairly: choose the right reporting verb, paraphrase and acknowledge your sources.

Reporting verbs carry a judgement

Reporting verbs are not neutral. stellen, betogen, constateren report a position neutrally; opperen marks a tentative suggestion; beweren suggests you doubt the claim; aantonen means you accept it as proven.
Volgens + source keeps main-clause order (verb second): Volgens Bakker (2021) is het effect klein. Zoals starts a subclause (verb last): Zoals Bakker (2021) opmerkt, is het effect klein. After a quotation: “…”, aldus Bakker.
In indirect speech, pronouns shift and the verb goes to the end: Bakker: “Wij hebben dit niet onderzocht.” → Bakker geeft aan dat zij dit niet hebben onderzocht.
A good paraphrase changes both the words and the sentence structure — and still names the source. Ideas you build on are ontleend aan someone: Dit begrip is ontleend aan Foucault. In navolging van Bakker gebruik ik de term ‘veerkracht’.
Position yourself: Ik onderschrijf deze conclusie. (I endorse) De auteur erkent dat de steekproef klein is. (acknowledges) Politicians zich beroepen op a report to support their case.
