Philosophy basics
Talk about thinking itself — reason, consciousness, free will — and build abstract nouns.
Grammar
Abstract nouns: het + infinitive, het + adjective, and suffixes
- Any infinitive can be used as a het-noun: het denken, het bestaan, het twijfelen. An object can go before it or follow with van: het vragen stellen / het stellen van vragen.
- Het + adjective + -e names an abstract quality: het goede (the good), het ware (the true), het onbekende (the unknown). Compare iets goeds (something good).
- Suffixes and their articles: -heid (de vrijheid), -ing (de redenering) and -iteit (de causaliteit) are de-words; -isme (het determinisme) is a het-word.
- Arguing step by step: Stel dat de mens geen vrije wil heeft; dan volgt daaruit dat… Uitgaande van deze premisse… A conclusion that is already in the premise is a cirkelredenering.
- Watch the near-twins: de rede = reason (the faculty of thinking), de reden = reason (cause, motive). Volgens Kant moet de mens zijn rede gebruiken.
