Formal prepositional expressions

Write compact, formal Dutch with fixed prepositional groups such as in het licht van, ten gevolge van and op grond van.

Grammar

Complex prepositions: one meaning, one block

  • Fixed groups like in het licht van (in light of), ten gevolge van (as a result of), op grond van (on the basis of), ten koste van (at the expense of) and in afwachting van (pending) work as a single preposition, followed by a noun phrase.
  • They let you replace a whole clause: Omdat het hard stormde, werd de wedstrijd afgelast. → Ten gevolge van de storm werd de wedstrijd afgelast. A fronted group causes inversion: In het licht van de cijfers heroverweegt de gemeente het plan.
  • Referring back to a thing, replace van + dat with daarvan: in afwachting daarvan, ten gevolge daarvan, naar aanleiding daarvan. Never *in afwachting van het.
  • Ten and ter are frozen forms — learn them with the phrase: ten gunste van (in favour of), but ter gelegenheid van (on the occasion of) and ter vervanging van (to replace).
  • Keep your register consistent: these groups belong in letters, reports and news, not in a chat message.
