C1 · Lesson 231 · Style & register (C1)
Spoken vs written Dutch
Recognise colloquial Dutch — effe, ie, ik had zoiets van — and know when to switch to written forms.
Grammar
Colloquial features and their written equivalents
- Spoken Dutch shortens words: effe (= even, in chats ff), 't (= het), 'n (= een), 'm (= hem) and ie (= hij). Ie is unstressed, so it only follows the verb or a conjunction — never at the start: Komt ie nog? Ik denk dat ie ziek is.
- Topic drop: in speech the first word of a main clause is often left out when it's obvious — a subject or an object like dat: (Dat) weet ik niet. → Weet ik niet. (Ik) ben zo terug. → Ben zo terug.
- Quoting thoughts and reactions: Ik had zoiets van: dit gaat nooit lukken. (I was like / my feeling was) and Hij keek me aan, zo van: waar heb jij het over? (as if to say). In writing use Ik dacht: …, Mijn eerste reactie was … or alsof hij wilde zeggen ….
- Fillers and softeners like zeg maar, gewoon, nou ja, sowieso and echt make speech sound natural, but in written texts they come across as vague or sloppy.
- All of this is perfectly fine with friends, on WhatsApp and in casual emails to colleagues. In essays, reports, application letters and official emails, use the full written forms.
