Proverbs & anti-proverbs

Learn the old-fashioned grammar of proverbs — and how columnists, Loesje and comedians twist them.

Grammar

Old grammar, new twists

  • Proverbs preserve older grammar: no articles (Haastige spoed is zelden goed), wie … die … with a resumptive die (Wie niet waagt, die niet wint; Wie wat bewaart, die heeft wat) and fossilised case forms: ten halve, ten hele (ten = te den).
  • An anti-spreekwoord keeps the structure and rhythm but swaps the ending: Wie het laatst lacht, heeft de grap niet begrepen. Beter laat dan nooit — maar beter nooit laat. Geen woorden maar daden becomes the cynical Geen daden maar woorden.
  • Since 1983 the poster collective Loesje has been sticking up one-liners that play with exactly this kind of familiar language.
  • A twist only works if the original is instantly recognisable, so anti-proverbs are built on the best-known sayings. In speech, a twisted proverb is usually marked with a pause or a grin; in writing it often appears in headlines and column titles.
