C2 · Lesson 311 · Translating, mediating & precision (C2)
Diplomatic language
Read between the lines of communiqués: what “openhartig” really means, and how protest escalates in diplomatic Dutch.
Grammar
The code of the communiqué
- Diplomatic texts say hard things softly.
- Passive and nominal style keep the agent vague: Er zijn fouten gemaakt. Er is overeenstemming bereikt op hoofdlijnen (= the details are still disputed).
- A new ambassador presents his or her geloofsbrieven (credentials) to the head of state; a diplomat who is expelled is declared persona non grata.
