Headline Dutch
Decode compressed newspaper headlines: dropped articles, the headline present, bare participles and quote colons.
Grammar
The grammar of the krantenkop
- Headlines drop articles and auxiliaries: Brand verwoest boerderij = Een brand heeft een boerderij verwoest.
- The present tense reports something that has just happened: Minister stapt op = the minister has resigned.
- A bare past participle is a passive perfect: Verdachte aangehouden = De verdachte is aangehouden. Wil or dreigt + infinitive points to the future: Kabinet wil accijns verhogen, Fabriek dreigt te sluiten.
- A colon introduces who is speaking: Artsen: ‘Wachtlijsten onaanvaardbaar’. Dutch newspapers usually use single quotation marks in headlines.
- Short, punchy words win: rel (not ongeregeldheden), topman (CEO), ophef (uproar), zeperd (flop), alarm slaan, onder vuur liggen.
